How to tackle RES Section B case studies

Why it matters

Each paper’s Section B has 20 questions on one or two case studies, worth 40 marks. That’s two marks per question, twice Section A.

A repeatable method

1. Skim the questions first so you know what facts to look for.
2. Read the case once, slowly. Mark each party, their citizenship, what they own, dates and amounts.
3. Name the rule before looking at the options: ABSD for a second property, MSR for HDB, the agent’s duty to disclose.
4. Eliminate options that use the wrong party’s facts. Most distractors do exactly this.

Common traps

• A fact that changes halfway, such as a party becoming a PR or selling a property.
• Correct arithmetic on the wrong base figure.
• Answering from general knowledge instead of the facts given.
